In olden days, the REAL theatre days, one received TELEGRAMS for “First Nights”.
This wonderful custom seems to have vanished, all in the name of “progress” and has been substituted with “emails”.

Yeadon show producer hits back in 'boycott' row
By Annette McIntyre

The producer of a show about a sixties singing star has hit back at claims that she wants fans to boycott the production.
A letter signed by Kathy Kirby has appeared in the national press urging her followers not to go to the show, Secret Love, which is being launched in Leeds at the City Varieties on Friday May 9th at 7-30pm.
But the show's producer, Graham Smith, is adamant that the star, would not have signed the letter if she had realised what its content was.
He says Kathy Kirby was not well enough to write a letter of complaint about the show. And he believes she has been influenced by somebody else.
Mr Smith, from Yeadon, said the letter claims that Kathy Kirby would not want her name to be associated with the show.
But he stressed he believed she had not written the letter but had simply signed a blank piece of paper.
He stressed that no-one knew the content of the show until it opened in May and he did not believe she would have asked her fans to boycott it.
"The truth is that the person or persons behind the boycott think they are the only ones allowed to tell the story. I wish they would put their money where their mouths are as I have and stop trying to destroy genuine hard work and effort.
"It is one of the great sadnesses of Kathy Kirby's career that she has been used and abused by many.
"It appears that the same is still happening a quarter of a century after she gave it all up to live a reclusive lifestyle," he said.
"I do hope at the end of the day that Kathy sees this for what it is - which is a tribute to her life and her music."

WORLD ENTERTAINMENT NEWS REPORTS ON BID TO DAMAGE SHOW! Thursday 17th of April 2008 19:31
KIRBY SHOW PRODUCER SLAMS BITTER BIOGRAPHER

By Tim Nixon
Senior Wire Editor
World Entertainment News Network

The producer of a stage show about KATHY KIRBY has accused the sixties pop singer's biographer/manager of instigating a bitter campaign to have the play pulled - in his client's name.
Graham Smith - who's bringing the reclusive star's life story to the U.K. stage - has hit back at a letter signed by Kirby in which she urges fans to boycott the production, insisting she doesn't want her name associated with the story it tells.
He is adamant the letter was the work of author James Harman, who has taken "umbrage" over Smith's refusal to use his "unsuitable" script for the production. Furthermore, Smith - who published Harman's biography of Kirby, titled Secrets, Loves And Lip Gloss, through his Mediaworld company in 2005 - claims the Secret Love star is not well enough to write such a complaint.
Smith believes Harman wrote the letter before asking 69-year-old Kirby - who withdrew from performing and public life in 1982 - to sign it, unaware of what she was putting her name to.
He tells WENN, "Mr Harman wrote a script which was decided to be unsuitable and took umbrage when he was told so. Then, as dates for the show Secret Love started to come in, he began his campaign. When did anyone last hear of Kathy Kirby personally? She signs many a blank sheet of paper but it is no one else but James Harman who has added the content.
"It claims that 'the concept which he (Smith) is staging is not one I would wish my name to be associated with'. Nonsense. Harman was terrified when his book was published that she would object, she didn't, and that was very much a warts and all story. It goes on to say that her name would be tarnished if the show did not receive critical approval. Nonsense. No one knows the content of the show until it launches in Leeds on 9 May (08), so why say she wants her fans to boycott it? "This is sour grapes from Mr Harman and his small camp of followers, but when they begin to try and damage my business affairs with lies and deception I must reply.
"It is one of the great sadnesses of Kathy Kirby's career that she has been used and abused by many. It appears that the same is still happening a quarter of a century after she gave it all up to live a reclusive lifestyle. Mr Harman will claim to be her manager still, what a pity he does not have the acumen to realise that the show I am launching could have had benefit for his client too."
